Beneath the Wings

Slowly and gently covering, the earth welcomes the restful embrace of winter.

When light arrives again,
the obscurity formed by winter will transform into sweetness, awakening the power to bestow happiness.

On December 17, I arrived in the Snow Country of Yasunari Kawabata,
witnessing the land gradually pass from scattered coverings of snow into an endless field of white.

Living in the snow for the first time, I watched fragments of ice drifting down from the sky. It felt wondrous—almost as if the air itself had taken form, making the invisible currents of the atmosphere suddenly visible.

After only five minutes outside, my body became dusted with snow, as if I had quietly become a part of the Snow Country. It felt like a kind of welcome—snow gently settling upon the body. Though it was cold, the cold of the outside only made me more aware of the warmth of being alive. And without noticing, my attention began to linger on every blade of grass and every tree along the street.

From gentle settling to heavy covering, the clearly defined seasons of Niigata seem to be forced into a kind of shutdown during winter. Yet this period of rest quietly stores nourishment for the coming seasons. When sunlight returns, the heaviness of the past will melt away, leaving behind rich nutrients for future life.

The Hoshitoge Rice Terraces, which coexist with snow, receive mineral-rich sediment carried down from the surrounding mountains as the snow accumulates. These sediments flow into the terraces, bringing abundant minerals to the fields.

Uncontrollable snowfall covers everything in white. Though the land seems to lose its colors, beneath the surface it quietly brews endless new possibilities. This made me want to create together with the snow—using my own methods, and learning to coexist with the uncontrollable.

Carrying my watercolors, I painted the plants and trees as they gradually entered winter’s dormant state. Then, through the natural covering of falling snow, traces were left behind—marks that belonged only to the snow and me.

Through the process of drawing together with the snow, a rhythm gradually emerged between us through constant adjustment and exchange. Leaving behind just the right traces, the works were then displayed upon the walls of snow—revealing the form I imagined: a moment before rebirth, when life is quietly gathering and shaping itself.
